About Michael
At the age of 11, Michael watched a film on guitar making at his school guitar club, on that day he decided he was going to be a maker of Spanish guitars.
In 1974 he became the youngest student ever to be accepted on the full-time Instrument Making Course at the London College of Furniture where he spent three years under the tutorage of the late, great Herbert Schwarz. Some six years later, he returned to the college as a visiting tutor himself, mentoring some of today’s most well-known makers.?
Michael set up his first, small workshop in Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire which was built by his father in 1977. One of his first customers was Richard Cobby from Northampton Guitar Studio and Hampton Music Publishers. This brought him to the attention of Robin Pearson at the Nottingham Guitar Centre who commissioned and sold many early Gee guitars throughout the United Kingdom. Around this time, he also collaborated with the renowned Luthier Martin Fleeson.?
After marrying Andrea in 1981, Michael moved his workshop to Earls Barton were he continued to craft many fine instruments. Over the next 35 years, his work became revered by many exceptional players from around the world, many of which have signed his visitors' book (See testimonials page). Over 600 guitars were made in the Earls Barton workshop.
In 2016, Michael and Andrea bought a former public house in Reedham on the Norfolk Broads and have been slowly completing renovations to the property now known as The Old Tavern. Michael’s workshop is in the heart of the house in what was originally known as the 'Ladies Bar'.
Michael continues to send his much sought after guitars to accomplished players and avid collectors worldwide.
